Up north, head to Banff where Lake Louise is one of the consistent North American destinations opening in early November. Add Sunshine Village, too, and visitors get two resorts for holiday skiing. Off the snow, soak in hot springs, twirl on ice skates, sightsee on the Banff Gondola and Christmas shop downtown.

While you probably won’t find traditional turkey and trimmings, you can savor Bon Appetit Banff, a 10-day festival Nov. 15-25. Dine on three-course, prix fixe specials in some of the 22 participating restaurants, including The Bison and the Maple Leaf Grille.
