The latest edition to Formigal's variety of bars and restaurants is a big hit with skiers and snowboarders. The Iglu Bar, a ski-in/ski-out venue on the slopes, has frozen walls and a long bar chiselled from ice.
The Iglu Bar opened at the end of December 2008 and is proving very popular, particularly for its large sun terrace often featuring live music. The bar specialises in alcoholic and non-alcoholic cocktails and snacks.
Formigal, Spain's largest ski resort, is also now easier than ever to get to: Sunday Dec. 21, 2008, saw the arrival of the first flight from London Gatwick to Huesca-Pirineos Airport, just a 75-minute bus ride from Formigal. Monarch is now running this one-hour, 50-minute flight on Airbus 320 throughout the winter season.
The resort is part of the Aramon ski area and its 137 kilometres of downhill pistes are divided into 202 runs for all levels, including seven green, 16 blue, 29 red, and 38 black. Pistes reach a skiable height of 2200 metres altitude.
Formigal village is set at 1510 metres and many of the runs are above 2000 metres, so skiers and snowboarders enjoy reliable snowcover. The 22 ski lifts can transport up to 36,780 people per hour.
