Mt. Rose is one of the Tahoe area's hidden secrets.

It's not the largest hill in the area - Rose has 1,200 skiable acres as compared to neighboring giants Squaw Valley and Heavenly, which are more than triple in size - but it rides big, particularly on the Slide Mountain side, which has wide-open bowls perfect for a day's cruising.

Rose, which is 25 minutes from downtown Reno, is also the site of the legendary Chutes, up to 1,500 vertical feet of some of the steepest inbound terrain in the region.

Rose, with the Tahoe area's highest base elevation (8,260 feet) and generally overlooking the arid Nevada desert, has some of the best powder skiing around. (What Rose doesn't have is on-site lodging, but with 17,000 rooms available a half-hour or less away in Reno, it's really not necessary.)

Another thing Mt. Rose has going for it is special lift-ticket deals.
