Schladming was the clear winner in voting at the FIS congress in Cape Town, South Africa, with no second round required. The losing candidates were Vail/Beaver Creek who were second with four votes and St Moritz and Cortina who polled a vote each.
It will be the first Austrian venue for the Championships since St Anton staged them in 2001. The last Championships were in Are, Sweden during the 2006-7 season, next winter the bi-annual Championships will be staged in Val d'Isere, and in 2011 in Garmisch, Germany.
Other decisions by the 46th FIS congress were that the 2012 FIS Ski Flying World Championships will be staged in Vikersund, Norway; the 2013 FIS Nordic World Ski Championships at Val di Fiemme in Italy, the 2013 FIS Freestyle World Championships in Voss, Norway and the 2013 FIS Snowboard World Championships in Stoneham, Canada.
