Mammoth is the first ski resort to open in California and joins Copper and Loveland in Colorado and Killington in Vermont which have already opened.  Copper Mountain, Breckenridge and Keystone in Colorado will open this weekend.

A powerful storm hit the area over the weekend, dropping up to 45cm (18 inches) of snow on the resort. On Monday morning hundreds of skiers and riders racked up their first runs of the season on a base of 15 - 30cm (6-12 inches) of manmade and natural snow.

More snow is in the forecast as another storm is poised to hit Mammoth in the next 24 hours. Additional terrain is expected to open later in the week once the storm clears.
