Ischgl will open with a major pop music concert and several other leading Austrian ski area resorts are opening too including the Arlberg region (Lech picture attached), again with deep snow waiting.
The best snow depths are on Austria's glaciers where Solden, Pitztal, Huntertux, Kaunertal and Molltal each have between 135cm (4 feet, 6 inches) and 150cm (5 feet) of snow on upper slopes. The biggest snow accumulation of the past week has however been at Wildschonau, with 80cm (2 feet, 8 inches), of fresh snow falling.
To the north many resorts in Germany have also already opened, once again with great early season snow. The Kleinwalsertal region has some of the best with a metre of snow (3.3 feet) on upper slopes. Balderschwang and Garmisch have similar totals and again there have been falls of up to a metre of new snow on Germany's mountains in the past week.
