However 2008 has been the best December on record for Silverton Mountain, where another metre (40 inches) of new snow fell over 24 hours at Christmas, bringing the mid mountain base to 2.5m (99 inches) deep. Silverton Mountain has received nearly five metres (more than 196 inches) of new snow so far this season.
All roads to and from the Town of Silverton were closed due to avalanche hazard. The snowfall breaks the December snow record set just the previous year.
" The skiing has been unbelievable this season with several feet of fresh and deep snow for each weekend." said a resort spokesperson.
Silverton Mountain normally averages 400" of snow per year, with the previous record of 600" inches set in 2007/2008.
