Davos sent a small army of 120 ski instructors to Zurich to highlight the fact that, “We have some open pistes, sunny terraces and we are in good moods!” according to a resort spokeswoman.
Ischgl has 25 lifts open serving 81kms (51 miles) of piste and you can ski down to mid station of all three gondolas. The highest run down from Greitspitze is open.
The resort brought its full arsenal of 1000 snow cannons in to action to produce great conditions, using 650,000 cubic metres of water and spending Euro 1million in order to ensure the slopes were in as good condition as they are.
The exceptional effort can be quantified in that last season the total amount of snow produced took 800,000 cubic metres throughout the entire season and previous seasons have seen an average of 400,000 cubic metres required for the entire winter.
“You can see how extraordinary the current conditions are and the lengths to which the resort has gone to deliver its promise of a five month long snow-sure season - and Ischgl fans have not been disappointed for the opening of the 2011-12 season.” said Sue Freeman who represents Ischgl in the UK.
There were 14,800 skiers and boarders on the mountain on Saturday and 18,000 people at the Roxette season opening concert in the village in the evening.
The weather has been unusual with inverted temperatures - 8C higher at the top of the mountain than in the village.
