The best young rippers in the Northwest will be displaying their stuff at the second annual Cowboy Up Junior Freesking Challenge at Stevens Pass the weekend of Jan. 30-Feb. 1.

This free-ride event will give boys and girls between the ages of 12 and 17 a chance to show judges what they are made of as they rip down Cowboy Ridge through powder, around trees and spires, down chutes, and over cliffs. The competition will take advantage of the terrain of "7th Heaven" and "Cloud 9." This highly visible venue will be a good test of endurance and creativity for competitors and great spectacle for viewers.

The Cowboy Up competition is part of the International Free Skiers Association North American Junior Freeskiing Tour, and top skiers at Stevens Pass will be invited to participate in the Junior North American Championships at Crystal Mountain in early April.

Registration for the Cowboy Up Freeskiing Challenge is open to any junior competitor with the $145 entry fee, and registration and other details are available online. There will be a mandatory athlete meeting on Friday, Jan. 30 at 5 p.m. The first day of the two-day competition begins Saturday at 10 a.m. There is prize money for the top riders and lots of goodies for all competitors.
