The Randonnee Rally, a leg on the Colorado Ski Mountaineering Cup (Cosmic) series, will take place at Crested Butte Saturday, Feb. 7.

The ski mountaineering competition is open to all interested parties and will require participants to ski their way up, down, and across Crested Butte's Extreme Limits terrain.

The race, which will test anyone's alpine touring skills, endurance and equipment, begins at 8 a.m. at the ski area base, and will set off with skinning up groomed runs to wake you up (there will be 5,000 or 3,000 vertical feet of climbing overall depending on racing category).

There are several racing categories, including pro and recreational men's and women's divisions and team competitions.

But no matter which level of racing you choose, there is mandatory gear for everyone, and that includes helmet (a cycling helmet is OK), avalanche beacon, shovel, probe, small pack with ski loops and skins.

The event is similar to a mountain bike race or fun ski race, where just looking forward to powder skiing and getting a good morning's exercise is excuse enough to enter for many competitors. There is a piece of a $10,000 purse to get the gung ho racers motivated.
