The ever popular and always thrilling Cholula Triple Air show returns to Mountain High for the 11th go-round Saturday, Feb. 7.
This contest, whose past winners are a veritable who's-who of snowboarding elite (Shaun White, Kevin Pearce, matt Hammer, Keegan Valaika, Hana Beaman and Laurie Currier are included in that roster), is a modified big-air competition. There are three huge jumps - figure hits ranging from 50 to 75 feet -- between the rider and the podium, and the athletes are judged on their overall performance, whose criteria include technical difficulty, amplitude and execution.
The spicy contest - the title sponsor is a hot sauce, after all - is the resort's biggest event of the season, with $25,000 in prize money being distributed to the top competitors.
The Cholula Triple Air is open to all snowboarders who have the wherewithal ($150 registration fee) and the cajones to hang with the big boys and girls. The payout goes 16 deep in the men's division and the top six women will receive cash prizes. All contestants will receive breakfast and lunch.
Registration opens at 7:30 a.m., with the competition beginning at 10 on Lower Chisholm run. There will be two qualifying runs, with the top 16 men and top six women advancing to the final.
The entire Cholula Triple Air show will be webcast on reelcomp.com.
