'Geezer Games' Descend On White Pine Feb. 11-15

White Pine hosts the skiing events for the Wyoming Senior Winter Games. White Pine hosts the skiing events for the Wyoming Senior Winter Games.

Seniors across Wyoming prepare to descend on Pinedale in mid-February for a big winter party and competitions. The Wyoming Senior Winter Games, otherwise nicknamed the "Geezer Games," are scheduled for Feb. 11-15.

The town of Pinedale will host pickleball, swimming, hockey, and speed skating events, while White Pine Ski Area becomes the home for ski events sprawled over five days. Anyone 50 years old and above can participate; even seniors from outside Wyoming are invited to attend.

The event kicks off Wednesday night with the opening ceremonies, a torchlight parade, and chili dinner at the ski area. Competitors in the games are invited to participate in the torchlight parade. Competitors can purchase discounted lift tickets with their race bibs.

Alpine races include a slalom short course of 20 gates set on a gentle grade across 900 feet with a 220-foot vertical drop. The slalom long course is geared for intermediate to expert skiers. Its course sets 45 gates on a 2,000-foot-long grade with a vertical drop of 700 feet. The giant slalom course uses 40 gates on a slope 4,900 feet long and a vertical drop of 850 feet.

Alpine skiers also can compete in the Alpine-Nordic-Snowshoe Relay. The downhill leg starts the relay on Wind River Run, skiing about 2,000 feet. The cross-country skier and snowshoers finish the relay. Competitors can enter the Alpine-Nordic Combination Challenge, which tallies your totals from selected downhill and cross-country events. Other White Pine events include a snowshoe race, biathlon, Nordic classic, Nordic freestyle, and mixed cross-country relay.

You can register for the event through Feb. 10. Registration costs $30 in January. February registrations cost $40.
