One of the more endearing and iconic images of Steamboat is that of a person on a pair of skis being towed down Lincoln Avenue, the town's main street, by a horse and rider.

That particular event - known as ski joring - is all part of the annual Steamboat Winter Carnival, which this year will take place for the 96^th time Feb. 7-8.

The Winter Carnival started back in 1914 as a way to help residents cope with cabin fever during the height of the coldest season. The event continues in the 21^st century as a way to celebrate winter, as a reason for neighbors to gather and as an opportunity for everyone to experience a piece of Steamboat's history and tradition.

The celebration includes a variety of events that embrace Steamboat's heritage - both as a ranching town and as a world renowned winter mountain resort. Such diversions ski jumping (on nearby historic Howelsen Hill), snowboarding jam session, the Soda Pop slalom, a tubing party, the Diamond Hitch Parade (which includes the local high school marching band performing on skis), and a fireworks display.

The four-legged set will be well represented with such horse-and-person competitions as the street slalom, ski joring, ring and spear, and donkey jump.
