Ski British Columbia's Silver Star in February, and you can pack out your vacation with Winter Carnival events. Vernon celebrates its 49th Annual Winter Carnival for ten days, Feb. 6-15.
The Winter Carnival Parade through downtown Vernon is a wacky affair to kick off the celebration Saturday, Feb.7, at noon. Other events in town include ice sculpting, a hot air balloon fiesta, curling bonspiels, and outdoor skating parties.
Silver Star plays host to the carnival's annual BC Snow Sculpture Competition, Feb. 6-8. Eight teams whittle away on snow for three days to create their entries. Tour all eight in the village area to vote on the People's Choice Award. Winners of the event travel to Quebec to compete on the national level.
The resort also hosts the 29th Annual Canaccord Capital Over the Hill Downhill Feb. 6-8. The race is Canada's oldest recreational downhill. Enter as an individual or a team in a category based on the combined team age. Teams must include one woman, one person over 35 years old, and all team contestants must have current membership with Alpine Canada. Those who don't may purchase memberships on site.
Valhalla Pure at Silver Star will guide two-hour snowshoe safaris Feb. 7, 8, 14, and 15. Adults tours cost $36, and children may also go along for $30 each. Snowshoes, on-mountain transport, and a guide are included, plus hot cider and cookies around a bonfire.
Finish of your stay by cross-country skiing at night by lantern-light. The Sovereign Lake Nordic Club lights up 4.5-kilometers of Nordic track at Silver Star with 110 lanterns for the Lantern Ski on Valentine's Day.
