The opening of the FIS Moguls World Championships (Dual Moguls) will be held in Méribel for the first time Thursday Dec. 18. The world's best freestylers will meet at the Corbey Stadium in Meribel centre to participate in this first international event for the season.

It is a chance of skiers to show their mogul technique and acrobatic skills. Competitors will ski down a steep 10-degree slope of 270 metres in length covered by moguls and perform two different jumps on the way down. The event features a qualification round and a final. Marks are awarded by a panel of seven judges; 50 per cent is marked on technique, 25 per cent on the jumps and the other 25 per cent on speed.

The Dual Mogal event is especially fun for spectators as it involves two skiers. The Meribel Tourist Office says: "The Dual Mogal is a parallel race where two skiers start at the same time, each with their own fall line. The winner of each race qualifies for the final. Then the final determines the winner of this World Cup event."

Méribel opened for the winter season Dec. 13.
