There's more to having fun in the snow than doing laps on your favorite chairlift.
You'll have the opportunity to find out how when the SnowSports Industry of America - whose slogan is "Winter feels good" - conducts its Winter Trails Day, an annual national promotion to get children and adults to try snowshoeing and/or cross-country skiing at relatively little or, generally, no cost, Jan. 10.
Among the Colorado sites for Winter Trails Day are Bear Creek Nature Center in Colorado Springs, which will dispense snowshoeing and cross-country skiing information and instruction; High Trail Sports in Frisco, which will pass out snowshoes for free for those who wish try the sport (reservations a must; call (970) 668-3748), and Keystone Resort Nordic Center, which will conduct a free afternoon ECO tour (reservations a must; call (970) 496-4275).
The REI store in Denver will take part in Winter Trails Day at Echo Lake, but details have not been announced. Steamboat Ski Touring Center will participate but it hasn't determined in what fashion yet.
Estes Park will conduct a Winter Trails Day promotion featuring free snowshoe rental and tours, but they will hold it Jan. 14.
