Michigan ski areas have teamed with the state's McDonald's Restaurants once again to offer a popular and very affordable introduction to the sport of skiing or snowboarding. This marks the 16th year of the Discover Michigan Skiing program. The voucher includes a beginner lesson, ski or snowboard equipment rental, and a beginner area ski lift pass.

Twenty-four of the state's top ski areas scattered across both peninsulas are participating with the program. Some of the bigger areas in the Lower Peninsula include Boyne Mountain and Highlands, Nubs Nob, Shanty Creek, and Caberfae. The Detroit area big three - Mt. Brighton, Mt. Holly, and Pine Knob - will be participating, along with Swiss Valley and Timber Ridge. Ski Brule, Marquette Mountain, and Big Powderhorn are among the participants in the UP.

The voucher will be honored from Jan. 5, 2009, through the end of the month. The price for the Discover Michigan Skiing program, with voucher, is $30 for adults and $25 for children 7-14. The cost of the snowboard lesson and equipment is $40 for everyone 10 years and older. You must have the voucher, call the area of choice, and register ahead of the lesson time to sign up. Vouchers list all the participating ski areas. The Web site has a complete list of participating McDonald's restaurants where vouchers can be obtained.
