Time to dust off the boards. The Canadian Ski Patrol is hosting ski and snowboard swaps this fall across Alberta and British Columbia. The Winter Extreme swaps serve as good places to get rid of old equipment and find deals on new and used gear.

The Winter Extreme swaps provide a way to outfit kids with gear, since they often grow so fast that they need longer skis or bigger boots by the next season. Swaps also provide an economical way to gear up families or for those on a budget. Skis, snowboards, boots, poles, helmets, goggles, clothing and accessories are available.

The swaps sell used gear on consignment and new gear from vendors. Equipment sold on consignment should be in good condition and is inspected for safety. The new equipment is usually from the previous season, but sold at rates far less than prices in ski shops.

The regional ski swaps help raise funds to provide volunteer first aid and rescue services at ski resorts in British Columbia and Alberta. All of the proceeds from the swaps go to supporting the volunteer services at resorts such as Castle Mountain, Kicking Horse Mountain, Apex Mountain, Sun Peaks, Silver Star, Harper Mountain, Mount Seymour, Hemlock Valley and Manning Park.

The Canadian Ski Patrol, which was started in 1941, is a nationally registered charity with more than 5,000 certified members. In BC, it is a not-for-profit society. The organization started up the Winter Extreme Ski and Board Swaps more than 30 years ago to help raise fund and give skiers a way to get inexpensive gear and recycle used equipment.
