The Canadian Open Freeskiing Championships are coming back to Red Mountain in Rossland, B.C., this January. The two-weekend event rounds up some of the best freeskiers in North America.
"Red is proud to be hosting this Canadian classic for an eighth year," said Erik Kalacis, General Manager of Red Mountain Resort, in a news release. "We look forward to watching these incredible skiers ripping up the steeps, taking huge air, and enjoying our fabulous terrain."
The event is scheduled for two weekends in January with the Open Finals held on Mt. Roberts, a peak with a reputation for one of the longest and most challenging descents on the Big Mountain Freeskiing Circuit. The $12,000 cash purse is divided between the top Open Senior skiers.
The Junior contest takes place Jan. 9-10, and the Open Senior competition runs the next weekend, Jan. 15-17. The Junior event is open to skiers ages 7 to 18; however, all junior slots are full. Potential competitors must sign up on a waiting list by calling 800-663-0105. Open Senior skiers must be 19 years old or above to compete for the purse. Slots are still open, but registration closes Jan. 4 for the event.
The freeskiing championships follow the International Free Skiers Association's (IFSA) Big Mountain Freeskiing guidelines. Judges rank the athletes based on line choice, fluidity, technique, aggression, and control.
