Obergurgl Opens For Season; No Snow Shortage

Obergurgl opened for the winter season Nov. 14 and already there's no shortage of snow with a reported 80cm and more on the way.

Obergurgl, set at 1930 metres, is one of the highest resorts in Austria and has received exceptional good early snowfall. Forty-five kilometres of piste are now open and, with more snow forecast for the coming weeks, it won't be long before all 110 kilometres are groomed and ready for the first skiers. Sunny skiing exists from November to May.

A new panoramic bar, the Mountain Star, has been built at 3080 metres in the Wurmkogl skiing area in Hochgurgl, which is easily reached from Obergurgl. Here skiers enjoy a bird's eye view of the Otztaler Alps and the Dolomites.

The total length of the ski area in Obergurgl-Hochgurgl is 110 kilometres, with 35 kilometres of beginners' runs, 55 kilometres of intermediate runs, and 20 kilometres of expert runs. The area is connected by 24 lifts, including gondolas, chairs, and drags.

An eight-person gondola connects Obergurgl and Hochgurgl. This eight-minute ride is known for its panoramic views high above Konigstal and the Verwalltal Valley.

The town also is popular for its historical significance and museums. It is set in a traditional alpine style of Austrian charm and mountain hospitality.
