Skiers and snowboarders looking to increase their backcountry skills and education need to look no farther than Crested Butte this winter.

Crested Butte Mountain Resort and Crested Butte Mountain Guides have gotten together to form an Adventure Guide Program that combines backcountry ski skills and education with guided in-bounds and out-of-bounds skiing.

In taking the opportunity to learn more about backcountry skiing and safety, riders will be supplied for the day with an Osprey backpack and other necessities needed for hiking and exploring the mountain. Backcountry Access Tracker transceivers, probes, and shovels also are available for skiers and snowboarders interested in learning how to use the gear.

There are various price options for those wanting to take advantage of this program: an all-day guide is $610, a morning guide is $400, and an afternoon guide is $380.

But perhaps the best bang for the buck is to sign up for the CB Backcountry Guide 2-Day program which, for $1,070, gives you total immersion into out-of-bounds riding. The first day will be spent on the mountain learning about backcountry skills and equipment, such as skinning, transceiver operation, and safety procedures.

The second day will be spent exploring the pristine backcountry terrain that is available under the Crested Butte Mountain Guides' permit. One caveat: This program does require intermediate or above riding ability; however, all the equipment needed for safe backcountry travel will be provided.
