Perfect North Fills Skiing Void In Lower Midwest, Dixie

Indiana, better known for basketball, race cars, and hog farms, may surprise you to know that a ski area in the southeast corner of the Hoosier State draws well over 200,000 skiers, snowboarders and tubers to its slopes each season.

Perfect North Slopes, located near Lawrenceburg, Indiana, has the advantage of being about 30 minutes away from the Queen City of Cincinnati and a little over an hour from Indianapolis and Lexington, Kentucky.  Large ski resorts across the upper Midwest would love to post those numbers, especially when you consider the Hoosier season is only about a 90-day window.

"We pull skiers from the Dixie States on weekends and lots of day-trippers from Cincinnati as well as Indianapolis," said owner Chip Perfect.  "We make snow every chance we get and keep the slopes well covered all season long."

They average close to 30,000 lessons a season, and keep an inventory of 5,000 rental skis and 600 snowboards in rental stock;. about 60 percent of their clientele rent equipment.

Perfect North, which spreads along a ridge overlooking an ancient glacial river valley, opened in 1980 with four rope tows and a handful of runs on the Perfect family farm.  Today there are five chairlifts, over 20 runs - some wide open, some gladded - and one of the largest tubing parks in the region.  The runs tumble off two peaks and, with a 400-foot vertical drop, offer a nice collection of black and blue cruisers.
