The Polar Express is set to chug along the tracks of the historic Heber Valley Railroad Nov. 21 - Dec. 23. This holiday classic regularly sells out as it delights the kids and charms the adults with hot cocoa-serving elves, Christmas carols, a Christmas story and Santa on board. You don't want to miss them flip the switch on Downtown Salt Lake City, Friday, Nov. 28, 2008. The 7th annual celebration of holiday lights and shopping, music, and a traditional Christmas Market is a must for your après ski evening. The event combines four significant downtown venues: the Gallivan Center, Temple Square, The Gateway, and Broadway Boulevard.
You can't beat the brilliant lights on Temple Square. Festivities begin at 4:30 p.m. on Gallivan Plaza with special guests Kurt Bestor, Richard Paul Evans, and One Voice children's choir. Ice skate with Santa at the Gallivan ice rink and enjoy free cookies till 6 p.m. Then head to the Gateway with Santa Claus, for a 6:30 p.m. Jon Schmidt piano concert, and lighting of the holiday tree.
The Old World Christmas Market, modeled after European Markets, held on Gallivan Plaza, will be open Nov. 28 - Dec. 6, 11 a.m.-7 p.m. daily (except Sunday) and until 9 p.m. Friday, Dec. 5 to coincide with the Holiday Gallery Stroll. You'll be able to purchase one-of-a-kind, handmade items by local artisans and crafters for holiday gift giving. There will also be traditional flavors of the season including baked goods, kettle corn, candied nuts, spiced cider, and hot chocolate, and daily caroling from 4-6 p.m. Bonus. There's free parking at all Salt Lake City parking meters.
