Cascade Mountain Is An Easy Trip For Many In Heartland

Riding at Cascade Mountain. Riding at Cascade Mountain.

Cascade Mountain, literally located just a stones throw away from I-90/I-94 in central Wisconsin, is an easy drive for thousands of Midwest skiers.  Perched on a long ridge overlooking the interstate highway, Cascade is considered one of the top day-trip areas in the Heartland.  Chicago is three hours away, Milwaukee less than two, and Madison just a scant 30 minutes.

While it may be busy on winter weekends, the ski area is equipped to handle the crowds.  Lifts, simply put, are its strength.  They can move a lot of skiers uphill quickly with its 10 lifts, including a high-speed, detachable quad  This was the scene of the Badger State's first high-speed lift, which went into service in 1998.  Midweek you will have no problem with lift lines.

Like Nubs Nob on the Michigan side, Cascade is a pure ski hill.  No lodging, no mint on the pillow to worry about.  The total effort is directed to the ski hill and providing a good experience for the skier.  The 460-foot ski hill offers 27 trails, two terrain parks, and two halfpipes.  Cascades bump runs are legendary.  They'll make you wish for a teenager's knees again.  Mogul Monster, with Volkswagen-sized bumps, is open to expert skiers only.

The ski area used to have a tough reputation, but over the years Cascade has added several new beginner and intermediate runs to help soften that image.  There are 1,500 beds in nearby Portage and Wisconsin Dells.  Stay in nearby Dells, the waterslide capital of the Midwest, where you can ski all day and slide all night.  The kids will love it.
