It's An Uphill Battle For Life At Aspen

Aspen's annual ritual to raise awareness about the importance of organ and tissue donation known as the Summit for Life takes place the evening of Dec. 6.

The Summit for Life is a nighttime race from the base of Aspen Mountain to the resort's summit - a climb of 3,267 feet over some 2.5 miles. Racers can use their preferred choice of lighting - headlamp, flashlight, etc. - to find their way and whatever non-motorized equipment - snowshoes, skins, or other creative means - to get up the hill. 

This year's third edition of the race will have two start times: One at 5 p.m. for those competitors who think they will need more than two hours to complete the course, and one at 6 p.m. for those who figure two hours or less will do the trick.

There will be dinner, refreshments, live music and an awards party, when racers reach the summit.  There is a $40 registration fee and a commitment to raise additional pledges for each participant.

Supporters of the race who would prefer not to compete also can partake in the party on top of Aspen Mountain by signing up to "Ride for Life" and take the gondola up.  Tickets to the party cost $60 for adults, $35 for children older than 3.
