Mt. Ashland has an innovative program designed for teens who might be thinking about a career in the ski and snowboard business.
Dubbed the 7500' Crew, the apprenticeship program allows kids 14 to 18 years old to work up to eight Saturday or Sunday mornings. Students in the program receive pay, as well as many of the benefits offered to regular Mt. Ashland employees. These benefits include discounts on food and retail items, free rentals, free group lessons, and free lift privileges on the days they work.
Crew members receive employee training related to guest service, safety and appropriate work attitude, appearance, and behavior. Then they have the opportunity to work with Mt. Ashland employees in a variety of jobs, including terrain park maintenance, ski school assistant, rental shop boot fitter and/or board technician, lift ticket checker and parking lot attendant. Jobs are assigned on a rotating basis, so that all crew members have a chance to learn many positions during the course of the program.
Each participant will receive a packet at the end of the program containing tips on how to continue to hone their job skills, along with two letters of reference to help them land their next job. Applications - which can be downloaded from Mt. Ashland's Web site - are being accepted until Nov. 15.
