The memorial project was spearheaded by Jove, a Hunter Mountain Hall-of-Fame member, who has organized the FDNY and East Coast Firefighters Races since their inception.
Hunter Mountain has had a long connection with firefighters and police, and not only with Firefighters Races and Police Winter Games, but also as long-time season passholders and loyal Hunter skiers and riders. Years ago, there was a ski house on Main Street known as "Fire and Theft" because it was shared by all firefighters and police officers.
