Red Lodge Mountain in Montana was hit by a three-foot fall snowstorm over the weekend (Oct. 11-12). It was enough to shut down their offices and bring a temporary halt to seasonal preparations today (Oct. 13).

Collisions of Pacific and arctic weather fronts met over the ski resort on Saturday and Sunday. Fresh powder totaled up to 46 inches, burying roads, parking lots, and doorways into the resort offices at the mountain while the town of Red Lodge saw skiers don cross-country gear to get around.

The resort has closed their offices until midweek while they shovel the snow and remove the mounds of snow from parking lots and the access road. Red Lodge officials are asking that people do not attempt to drive up to the mountain until Wednesday.

Sheer volume of snow has prevented the resort from gaining access to the amount of snow piled on top of the mountain.

The resort does not plan to open early despite the snow.  Projected opening is still Nov. 28. "This is a very good start for our snowmaking crews to get down a very nice base for opening day," said an enthusiastic resort spokesperson.
