The first full season of snowboarding comes to Taos Ski Valley when the New Mexico resorts opens Nov. 27, and you can expect all sorts of preparations for the additional slope dwellers.
The Out To Launch Terrain Park, located on Maxie's run under Lift #7, has doubled in size, and the Children's Center has also expanded to make room for a whole new group of kids.
Both the adult and children's rental shops have been remodeled to accommodate snowboards and there's a new snowboard school for riders of all ages.
Skiers and riders will find events like a Boardercross/Skiercross Feb. 7 and a Slopestyle March 14, both sponsored by the USA Snowboarding Association. There is also to a new snowboard category in the Salomon Extreme Freeride Championships scheduled March 5-7.
Non-denominational events this season include the Brew Master's Festival and Christmas Eve Torchlight Parade in December; the K2 Women's Weekend in February; and founder Ernie Blake's Birthday Celebration in March, and more.
The two new runs Taos cut this summer are fair game to both types of riders. North American, a double black diamond glade with 1,400 feet of vertical guns for experts, while The Burrough with its magic carpet is best for newbies. The Burrough is 400-feet long this season but takes over a full hill next season.
