Canaan Valley Resort in Davis, W.V., offers skiing, snow tubing, snowboarding, ice skating, snowshoeing and cross-country skiing on the northeast-facing slopes of a wooded mountainside, surrounded by the incredible beauty of the Allegheny Mountains.
The resort also has the Beech Club with indoor lap pool, sauna, fitness room and whirlpool spa for après ski.
The longest trail drops 850 feet off a 4,280-foot-high ridge overlooking the Canaan Valley, and runs 6,000 feet to the base.
The Canaan Valley from which the resort takes its name is 15 miles long and 3 miles wide, and is reported to be the highest mountain valley east of the Rockies, with a base elevation of 3,100 feet. Much of its beauty is protected forever by the 16,000-acre Canaan Valley National Wildlife Refuge.
Snowmaking covers 86 percent of the resort's 91 skiable acres, supplementing the region's annual snowfall of 160 inches. Night skiing is offered on 11 slopes during prime season Saturdays and Sundays, and special holidays.
The resort has a 250-room lodge, but a more rustic experience is available at 23 private cabins and cottages, each with fireplace, linens, and full kitchen. Two-bedroom cabins sleep up to four; four-bedroom cabins sleep up to eight.
