Mount Snow is raffling off a piece of the resort's history to benefit local relief efforts as the Valley recovers after Tropical Storm Irene. This fall, one lucky winner will take home the Lift 11 Golden Chair, freshly painted and mounted on a custom built timber frame.

The Golden Chair from lift No. 11, the Grand Summit Express, has being removed along with its siblings to make way for new Poma four-place chairs with foot rests. Raffle tickets will be sold during the upcoming OktoBrewFest, October 8 & 9 -- the offspring of their annual Oktoberfest and the annual Brewer's Festival, which was cancelled this year in light of the damages Irene wrought on the surrounding community. Tickets are $5 each, with all proceeds going to area recovery funds. Tickets are also expected to be available online in the near future.

Why Gold?

So wait, what is the deal with these Golden Chairs anyway? It's a residual effect of the mountain's 50th Anniversary in 2004. Several #50 chairs around the mountain were painted in celebration. Some skiers and riders claim their best runs have come after riding a golden chair, others experienced luck in other ways and attributed it to a recent visit. Regardless of whether they possess any such power, the chairs have stimulated superstition and lore among the mountain's visitors for years. They continue to be eagerly sought by kids and adults waiting in the liftline.

More Heavy "Lifting"

The mountain ops team has been very busy this year. In the spring they dismantled the old Summit Local lift, cleared trees, blasted rock and have been working quickly to install a new 6-pack bubble chairlift, the Bluebird Express, set to spin its maiden season this fall. The Golden Chair raffle winner will be drawn at the Grand Opening.
