Protect Our Winters, a four-year-old nonprofit dedicated to mobilizing the mountain community to fight climate change, yesterday added four new members to its board of directors, including Olympic silver medalist and pro snowboarder Gretchen Bleiler.
“We are truly honored that this group has agreed to be part of POW’s leadership,” founder Jeremy Jones said. “Four years ago, POW was an idea. Now we have some of the best and the brightest in sports, science, sustainability and business guiding this organization.
The three other board members include Penn Newhard, owner of Backbone Media; Naomi Oreskes, professor of history and science at the University of California, San Diego; and Kristine Stratton, SVP of operations for Earthjustice.
The new members will double the board’s size and bring expanded expertise within the research, outdoor and sustainable products industry.
Currently POW has over 40,000 supporters and is partnered with several organizations including the Alliance For Climate Education and the Sierra Club, which works to build awareness about the issues of burning coal in mountain communities.
In addition to strategic partnerships, POW provides grants and programs for activism.
