Just about the whole town is listed in the National Registry of Historic Places. It's an antique hunter's paradise, but most important, for winter snowsports enthusiasts, just a few miles away tabletop farmland drops from dramatic bluffs of 500 feet or more to the edge of the mighty Mississippi River.
Chestnut Mountain, just a few miles from downtown Galena, sits on bluff overlooking the mile-wide river and offers some of the best skiing and riding in the lower Midwest. March is the perfect month, with its warming temperatures and bluebird days, to get in some great skiing and riding at Chestnut and stroll along the historic streets of this pre-Civil War boomtown. It's a great combination and unique.
