The good news is new legislation just passed to allow your hard liquor drinks to have a bit more kick for (hopefully) the same price. Now, you will find 1.5 ounces of alcohol in your whiskey and coke versus the old 1 ounce rule. Utah is the only state in the U.S. to limit the amount of liquor allowed in a standard shot according to the National Conference of State Legislatures. Every other state is allowed to "free pour", meaning the bartender mixes your drink as he sees fit. The bad news is you no longer can purchase what locals call a "sidecar", that's the extra shot of, say, whiskey you would order and then dump into your drink the minute the bartender turned away to make your drink "real." Adding to the mystery behind these new laws, customers can still order shots as long as they aren't of the same liquor as the ones in their main drink. So you can order a martini and a shot of tequila but you can't order a shot of vodka. Starting to comprehend? We didn't think so. Now, instead of getting drunk on stronger drinks, you can get sick from mixing your drinks. Finally, don't look for wine coolers and malt beverages in the local supermarket. These only will be sold in State Liquor stores.
