Flagstaff Nordic Center hosts its second marathon, billed as the "coolest marathon" in Arizona this month. It's a fundraiser for the North Country Community Health Center. The route has been described as the most scenic and difficult marathon in the Southwest. The 100 percent off-road single-track and dirt road course follows ski routes and gains 2,200 feet in elevation over 26 miles.
The Nordic center plans to host its annual Kahtoola Snow-or-No Snowshoe Race In January. The event mutates into a running race if lack of snow precludes snowshoeing. The center puts on their two classic style and freestyle races in February and March, along with the Eat, Drink, and Ski Merry, which is decidedly not a race.
Skiers and snowshoers travel the center's scenic groomed trails while stopping to drink wine and eat a three-course meal.
