UPDATE (6/29/11). The Las Conchas did reach Pajarito Ski Area above Los Alamos, NM, but chairlifts and the base lodge were spared and are apparently out of danger.

[R309R] Pajarito Ski Area is on the east side of the Jemez Mountains of New Mexico above the currently deserted and evacuated town of Los Alamos. The Las Conchas wildfire has scorched more than 60,000 acres in the mountains above the city as of mid-day Tuesday (June 28), but has apparently spared the ski area thus far.

A recorded message, not mentioning the fire, greets callers, though a news release from Los Alamos county Monday said fire crews are continuing to "actively work the area around the ski hill this evening."

All 12,000 residents of Los Alamos were evacuated in an orderly manner Monday as the blaze worked toward the potential of doubling in size Tuesday because red flag conditions persist with low humidity and high winds. New Mexico Governor Susanna Martinez visited the area Monday. The fire area is about 25 miles south of Santa Fe.

The fire is licking the Los Alamos National Laboratory, the 36-square-mile government nuclear facility, just outside of the town. Flames had reached the road forming the southern border of the property, but hot spots were quickly put out. The lab is closed to all but essential personnel.
