Summer? Nah. Aspen Skiing Company announced it plans to open the top of Aspen Mountain for an unusual dose of Memorial Weekend skiing and riding May 28-30, 2011.

A combination of a heavy spring snowfall and cool temperatures have left the top of the mountain covered in snow, even as the traditional "summer" season kicks in.

The base depth is 71 inches on top and the company plans to make 25 runs and 136 acres of mostly intermediate terrain available. The terrain is serviced by the Ajax Express chairlift. Additional weekends may be available as conditions permit. Aspen Powder Tours plans powder and corn skiing tours on the back of the mountain as well.

Uploading on the Silver Queen Gondola begins at 10 a.m., with the last ride down at 4:30 p.m. The Ajax lift will run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The Sundeck restaurant and Ajax Tavern will be open.

Aspen Snowmass Premier, Premier Silver and those age six and under ride free with 2010-11 season passes. All other passholders pay discounted rates. Single day tickets for the general public are $32 (ages 18-69); youth (ages 13-17) and seniors (70+) are $25; children (ages 4-12) are $15. Tickets will be sold at the Aspen Mountain kiosk on Gondola Plaza.

Four-Mountain Sports, 520 East Durant) will be open daily for $25 ski/snowboard rentals. They are offering plenty of deals on 2010-11 winter products, as well.
