Visitors to OnTheSnow.com have chosen Kirkwood Resort in the California High Sierra as their "Favorite Overall Resort" in the Far West for the second consecutive year. The data period for voting was January 2011 when a Nielsen audit showed 3.4 million unique browsers logged in to the world's most visited Web platform. OnTheSnow.com is published by Mountain News Corp.

The ski resort with the top average score (on a scale of 1 to 5) in each category, and a minimum number of entries, receives the award. Visitors then ranked them in five categories: Overall Favorite, Best Nightlife, Most Family-Friendly, Best Downhill Terrain, and Best Terrain Park.

"User-generated content is a very powerful and effective way Web visitors have to communicate with each other," said Mountain News Global Managing Director Chad Dyer. "Skiers and snowboarders are relying on the word of their peers when they make resort choices."

Here are just a few samples of what OTS visitors wrote about Kirkwood: "It has plenty of terrain variety and hidden trails to explore to keep you challenged for the whole season. I love boarding at Kirkwood." Another visitor wrote, "The best thing about Kirkwood is the lack of crowds. Lift lines are short or entirely absent and the slopes are never crowded, since the mountain is far from the casinos and nightlife of South Lake Tahoe."

Still another wrote, "Don't tell too many people about this wonderful hidden gem! Tons of fun, good prices, and great snow."

Kirkwood has a base elevation of 7,800 feet, and it is the highest starting point of any major resort in Lake Tahoe. Kirkwood catches the best snowstorms streaming in to the Sierra. There are 2,300 acres for skiing and riding, 65 trails, two high-speed quads, and top to bottom snowmaking on four runs.
