Bolton Valley's annual rite of spring - also known as pond skimming - is dedicated this year to Superheroes and Comics.

That's the theme, anyway, and the resort invites skiers and riders to dress as comic book characters and try their luck at getting across a man-made pond filled with icy water.

Pond skimming takes place on a man-made pond created especially for the event, right in front of the Base Lodge.

Entry fee is $5, in return for which competitors attempt to skim across the pond for special prizes and awards.

Participants must have a lift ticket for the day or a season pass to enter.

Registration is 10 a.m. to noon with skimming beginning at 1 p.m.

Skiers and riders are invited to join a post-skim complimentary wine tasting celebration at the Bolton Valley Deli in the base village area after the awards ceremony around 3 p.m.

The pond skimming is Bolton Valley's largest spectator event of the season, with hilarious action as well as music, a DJ, and food.

Bolton Valley Resort is less than 10 minutes from I-89 and less than 30 minutes from Burlington.

It offers skiers and riders of all abilities three mountain peaks with 71 trails and six lifts, plus three terrain parks including the Burton Progression Park.

Bolton Valley is one of only two ski resorts in the U.S. to implement wind power as an energy source and is the recipient of the National Ski Areas Association's 2010 Silver Eagle Award for environmental initiatives.

Bolton Valley has spring lodging packages that include slopeside accommodations and lift tickets from $79 per person per night.
