Sierra-at-Tahoe Resort surpassed its average annual snowfall in late February, setting the ski area up for a strong spring full of events. The resort is amping up for its spring fiesta season where skiers can enjoy the beach scene on snow and take in events.
A parade of storms mixed with cold temperatures built up a solid snow pack, boding well for spring skiing at Sierra-at-Tahoe. The resort crossed the 500-inch snowfall threshold in early March, a record seen in only 11 other winters since 1970. "Conditions have been unreal this year," spokesperson Steven Hemphill told OnTheSnow. "They should keep us going as long as we can.
"As for a closing day, historically Sierra Resort usually closes somewhere between the second and third week of April, depending on weather and conditions," added Hemphill. "While we have not set a closing date yet, we anticipate it will fall somewhere in the third or fourth week of April, thanks to the great conditions so far this season."
The spring beach scene moves to the slopes at Sierra-at-Tahoe. Head to the Baja beach all spring long located at the base of the West Bowl Express. The Baja Grill serves up fresh fish tacos, quesadillas, burritos, and Mexican treats while cranking up the fiesta atmosphere with lounging in Adirondack Chairs with a beer in the sun. Entertainment comes from watching skiers and riders on the jumps right in front of the grill.
Sierra-at-Tahoe is prepping for a lineup of spring events, including Billabong's Flaunt It April 9. The all-girls slopestyle and rail jam snowboard series will see the final stop of the competition at Sierra. The final competition for a $10,000 purse will feature the winners from each of the six prior stops in North America.
Other events include the Red Bull Butter Cup Tahoe Series spring rail jam April 2 and the annual Salsa Showdown at Sierra April 10. The winner of the homemade salsa contest gets a free season pass for 2011-12.
