The season started slowly in northern New Mexico, but recent storms have rejuvenated conditions at the resorts and given both skiers and ‘boarders hopes for finishing the season strongly.
Sipapu Ski and Summer Resort has loaded up the promotions and deals to take advantage of the late-season snowfall. Included in Sipapu's month of March attractions are extended hours, both serious and not-so serious competitions, and plenty of beer.
Mountain management extended lift closings to 5 p.m. for the week of March 13-20 and weekend of March 26-27. In between, lifts will stop turning at 4:30 p.m for the week of March 21-25. Closing is set for April 10.
The Black Diamond Telefest, a March 12-13 weekend of telemarking, features the skin-up, ski-down Freeheel Fray race on the first day. The next week features beers of a different brewer every après ski, called Micro Brew-Ski Week, on the lodge patio.
The Cardboard Derby sets up Saturday, March 19, pitting homemade cardboard concoctions against one another in a race down the hill for prize money. Sipapu offers a free moonlight hike around the mountain at 8 p.m., followed by hot refreshments, on the same date.
