Alpe d'Huez, together with the company Mobilboard Grenoble, offers a fun way to enjoy the resort with the Segway gyropod.
This novel form of transportation lets visitors take a tour of the resort in 30-45 minutes thanks to the programme "Alpe d'Huez Segway Tours."
During the day, gyropod drivers zip around special areas of the resort away from the skiers. This guarantees safety for both parties, and since Alpe d'Huez is a fairly big resort, still offers the possibility for three- to seven-kilometre circuits.
Every night at 6 p.m., nocturnal tours take off on the Rif Nel and Grenouilles pistes. The trip starts with flat terrain, but soon the coach will take you over bumps, banks, and turns just to add a little excitement. The Segways are equipped with powerful headlights to help you find your way around the gentle obstacles.
Several possibilities and prices exist:
15-minute initiation with games for €15 per Segway. This choice is popular for kids upwards of 8 years, since it takes place on roped-off flat terrain.
30-minute Alp'Découverte for €25 per Segway
45-minute Alp'Evasion for €35 per Segway (they'll give a full hour to OnTheSnow readers)
If you book with a group of five or more people, there is a €5 discount per person. There is always a coach with the groups and the coaches speak English.
To make sure there's a Segway for you, it's a good idea to call or e-mail at least half a day ahead of time. Mobilboard has eight machines that are available from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Children should weigh more than 40 kg (around 13-14 years) to have their own Segway during a longer ride, but smaller children can enjoy the 15-minute initiation.
