Snow-making at Appalachian

Both the Appaljack and Appal Jam terrain parks are also open featuring 13 rails, eight boxes and an 8 by 20 foot wall. The Blowing Rock, N.C., resort receives about 60 inches of natural snow a season, but ample snow guns can coat the mountain in several feet of snow in just two to three nights. While the mountain makes most of its snow when slopes are shut, when necessary, 20 to 40 foot snowmaking towers provide powder conditions at a minimal disturbance to skiers and riders. Appalachian estimates that it blows snow for anywhere from 600 to 900 hours per season from opening day till their scheduled closing. And with a promise to blow snow up until the last day of the season on April 1, winter enthusiasts should log plenty of days on the mountain despite a lackluster start.
