Powderhorn is in the midst of one of its best seasons in a number of years. The mountain is ready to celebrate what began as a dry season but has turned into a powder-friendly winter. Head to Grand Mesa to take part in the Dummy Jump, the Learn-to-Ski/Ride Series, the Kid's Park Challenge, Guest Appreciation Day, plus the Pond Skim and Closing-day Party.
The Dummy Jump is back for its second year launching Feb. 26. Simply build a "dummy" that will slide on snow without assistance, and send it off a huge kicker. The more creative the craft the better scored. Judges love themes and, of course, the biggest crash possible. The event takes place on the Peacemaker run at 5 p.m. Entry fee is $10. Finish off the day with a cold beer at the Odell Brewing Company Snow Bar as part of the Dummy Jump after party from 4 to 8 p.m.
Powderhorn's Spring Learn-to-Ski/Ride Series makes for the best bang-for-the-buck newcomer package. Participants must be a first-time skier or snowboarder. The professional instructors will have you making turns in three sessions. It's the perfect time to learn to ski or snowboard with sunny days and soft snow. Attend all sessions in the series and receive a season pass for the rest of this season, and all of next season. The three sessions include the Intensive Series March 16-18, and the Weekend Series March 13, 20, and 27. The $399 price tag includes lesson, lift tickets, and equipment rentals.
Bring the kids up to Rustlers Park March 19 for the Kid's Park Challenge Rail Jam geared towards skiers and snowboarders ages 15 and under. Registration opens at noon with the competition beginning at 1 p.m. Kids compete for fun and prizes. Age categories are 10 years & under, and 11-15 years old.
Guest Appreciation Day is one you won't want to miss. March 20 is Powderhorn's day to say thank you for joining them this season. Enjoy lift-ticket deals, live music, food and drink specials, and sales at The Alpine Trader & Café located at the base. Starr & Martin will provide live music at the Sunset Grille & Bar from 3 to 6 p.m.
The 2010-11 season culminates with The Pond Skim, April 3, marked as the most entertaining event of the season. This is the biggest party of the year as Powderhorn goes out with a sloppy splash. Registration is capped at 45 people. First come first serve, so register early. There's a $5 cover, with water flying at 5 p.m. at Majestic Lake Powderhorn. Enjoy live music by the Goodman Duo, and close out the season with a spring soak.
