France a Snowy Work of Art

In common with the rest of the Alps, along with recent heavy snowfalls has come an avalanche risk, currently ranked at level 3 of a maximum 5, also known as 'Considerable'. With record death rates in the French mountains last winter and a spate of deaths already this winter a few weeks ago after the previous good snowfall led thousands to head off piste for the first time this winter, resorts are stressing the need to be careful. Also in common with the rest of the Alps, temperatures are low – between 12 and 14 degrees below freezing, so the resorts are also warning skiers and boarders to wrap up well. Snow depths in resort are between 55 and 70cm (22 – 34 inches) and at the top of the slopes 118cm (just under four feet).
