Elk Mountain in Union Dale, Pa., has special programs to help women ski or ride better.

The programs are run by women instructors at the Elk Mountain Ski School, Sunday, Feb. 6 and Saturday, March 5.

Cost is $74 for instruction only; $89 for instruction and lift ticket; and $99 for instruction, lift ticket, and rental gear.

The programs are in their 19th year, and are set up for women 21 and over who want to master the mountain, conquer fear, or just have fun at any skill level.

Instructors ask participants to gauge their own skill level by asking these questions:

"Have you mastered the bunny slope but need a hand to tackle the intermediates? We know it's a big step and we will build your self-confidence with solid skiing skills beforehand."

"Are you a terminal intermediate? We know improvement comes more slowly at this state. We will provide motivation and a personalized plan of attack to work your way to the black diamonds."

"Do you ski everything but not without some apprehension? Our top level certified instructors can show you some pretty simple ways to improve your techniques and greatly expand your comfort zone."

"Are you ready for more of a challenge? How about bumps? Work on your rhythm and timing, balance and style. "

Each day begins with registration at 8 a.m.in the Winter Garden Restaurant. Participants meet by the flagpole near the Children's Village to form groups. Skiing and instruction is 9 a.m. to noon. The programs include a light lunch in the Winter Garden Restaurant noon to 1 p.m. Skiing, practice, and personal critique continues from 1 to 3:30 p.m. Social hour with a complimentary drink is 3:30 to 4:30 p.m.
