Let your competitive juices flow during the Nighthawks Race Series at Eldora Mountain Resort. Each discipline has a chance to take to yhe slopes every Wednesday night beginning Jan. 26 and wrapping up March 2. The races feature alpine, telemark, snowboarding, classic cross country, skate cross country, and snowshoe events that continue to grow in popularity.
Alpine races run in a dual Giant Slalom format open to downhill, telemark and snowboard competitors. Compete individually or as a co-ed team. Discounted tickets are available for non-pass holder. Registration takes place the afternoon of each event. Pay for one race at a time, or for the entire season of races.
The Nordic and snowshoe races take place on a two-kilometer loop, under the lights, at the base of Eldora. Each cross country race completes three to four laps for a total distance of six to eight kilometers of skate or classic skiing. The snowshoe race includes two to three laps and takes place on a different section of the Nordic trails. Organizers recommend wearing a headlamp for those in the snowshoe category.
"We have anywhere from 20-50 snowshoers and 50-100 Nordic skiers show up for the races," says Nancy Colton, Nordic Center Director. "Some people are competitive and others are just out to ski at night." Colton said that skiers and snowshoe enthusiasts come from all over the greater Boulder and Denver area to take part in the Nighthawks series.
"The races are short and so much fun," Colton concludes. "They're a great way to get together for a fun, social, active event in the middle of the week. "
