Mad River Mountain (MRM), Ohio's largest ski area, is hosting a couple of signature events over the next three weeks, which promise to be a lot of fun for both competitors and spectators.
Winterfest, the area's long-running mid-winter celebration, takes place Saturday, Jan. 29, featuring live entertainment, ski races, a cash purse Big Air event, and topped off with a fireworks display over the mountain at 10 p.m. Skiing and riding will continue until midnight.
It all begins Friday night with Roots High Power Sound System and The Meditations. Pete Funk and the Roots will hype up the crowd starting at 8 p.m. with The Meditations taking the stage at 9:30 p.m. The Meditations, from Jamaica, made a cameo appearance in the movie Cool Runnings. Yes, the one with the Jamaican Bobsled Team.
The main event kicks off at 10 a.m. Saturday with ski and snowboard races held on Chute, which will reopen to the public immediately following the races. Live entertainments begins at 5 p.m. with rhythm and blues being supplied by the Kress, Ross and Huff Band. The Big Air event takes place in Capital Park at 8 p.m., and the winner walks away with $200 cash. The Ark Band will heat up the lodge with Reggae music until midnight.
MRM hosts Pretty in Pink Sunday, Feb. 13, which is their signature for-charity women's event benefiting the Stephanie Spielman Fund for Breast Cancer Research and Ohio State University. The event is open to men and women. Just wear something pink to show support for the cause.
There will be both a ski and snowboard freestyle competition coupled with a GS race on the race course. Over $1,000 had been donated to the Stephanie Spielman fund in each of the last three seasons thanks to the generous support of the MRM community.
