Begbahnen Destination Gstaad AG has opened two new ski lifts this season as part of its ambitious investment plan which is to be completed in 2018.
Work began on Gstaad's new eight-seater cable car 'Rougemont-La Videmanette' over the summer and it opened to skiers over Christmas. The cable car transports skiers up to La Videmanette at 2200 metres.
Gstaad has also opened the new high-speed four-seater chairlift 'Chalberhöni-Vorderes Eggli' to replace the old lift which dated back to the 1960s. The new chairlift has the same departure point as the chairlift Les Gouilles and provides access to the highest point on the Vorderes Eggli. Lift capacity will increase from 800 to 1800 skiers per hour.
Gstaad offers skiing between 1000 and 3000 metres on 250 kilometres of pistes linked by 58 cableways (25 ski lifts, 10 gondolas, and 18 chairlifts). Families are particularly well catered for with 10 ski schools, eight children's ski nurseries, and numerous learning parks for kids and beginners.
Gstaad is one of the world's most famous ski resorts and the traditional rival to St Moritz, although the two are somewhat different in style. Gstaad is understated and has the most ambience, with more attractive chalet style buildings. It's been made even more pleasant by the recent 'pedestrianisation' of the main street.
