Cataloochee Ski Area in Maggie Valley, N.C., has a season-long deal for newcomers to skiing or snowboarding: The Intro to Skiing or Riding lesson is free, when guests rent equipment.

The deal is good any non-holiday Monday through Thursday, all season long.

Lessons are an hour and a half, and begin at 9:30 and 11:30 a.m., and 1:30, 3:30, 5:30, and 7:15 p.m.

Cataloochee's Snow School also has lesson programs for people who already have some skill at skiing or riding, whatever the level.

These include The Glide Program, Rust Removers, The Advanced Skills Program, and the Home Skillers Program, designed to tune up existing skills and move skiers or snowboarders to the next level.

These programs all run over a period of weeks, with different options to match different schedules and availability.

The Snow School also is offering a Big Kids program designed for parents of kids in the resort's after school program. The Big Kids program runs at the same time as the after school program.

Cataloochee offers 14 slopes, a quad chair, a triple, a double and two conveyors, a vertical drop of 740 feet, 25 acres of skiable terrain with 100 percent snowmaking coverage, and 10 slopes lighted for night skiing.
